The War Against God

God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Genesis 1.27

In his classic Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis famously described a lunatic as “on a level with a man who says he is a poached egg.” In my wife’s nurses’ training, she did a stint at a psychiatric hospital where some of the patients claimed they were Jesus Christ. For most of human history, people with such delusions were given treatment to help them overcome such surreal notions.

In America, where the pursuit of knowledge has resulted in the greatest advancements in human history, our rejection of God and His revelation – both in the Bible, and in nature – has resulted in us becoming “Exhibit A” to the truth of Romans 1.21-22:

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools

Just as America was built, and thrived, on a foundation of respect for God, there is a correlation between our rejection of God and the present cultural decline. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was asked what led to the demise of Russia; he replied, “Men have forgotten God. That’s why all this has happened.” Honoring God and His truth is the only solution to the problems of the world.

The truths in Genesis 1.27, quoted above, are at the core of our rejection of God. First, we are created in the image of God. The theory of evolution replaced God with ‘natural selection,’ and a Creator became superfluous. Mankind was nothing more than a product of random accidents, a highly-developed animal. As such, the wisest in our land deemed killing the unborn a neutral practice. A few weeks ago a senator in Maryland proposed legislation to legalize ‘abortion’ up to 28 days after a child is born. His bill, euphemistically called “the pregnant person’s freedom act of 2022,” allows a newborn baby to be left to die up to a month after being born if the mother no longer wants to keep it. We’ve lost our moral compass, and no longer know which way is up.

A second truth from Genesis 1.27 is this: We are created male and female. Today we live in a society where gender is ‘fluid,’ men win women’s swim races, pronouns are as changeable as clothing, and progressive educators teach five year-olds non-binary gender theory. Last week, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, nominee to serve on the Supreme Court, was asked to define a “woman,” and said she could not. It’s not that Judge Jackson doesn’t know what a woman is: She is a mother. But ‘progressive insanity’ infecting society today won’t allow her to say, “An adult female.” What any first-grader once knew, a Harvard-trained lawyer now cannot define. Truly, professing ourselves to be wise, we have become the greatest of fools!

The problem is not intellectual, but spiritual. It is a war against God. The commander in this war is Satan, enemy of God and man. God created us “in His image” and “male and female,” so getting us to deny intrinsic human value as beings created in God’s image, and promoting gender theory and fluidity which deny the Creator’s design, is really Satan’s scheme to get us to deny God, and destroy ourselves. We should not be surprised at this; his goal is to kill, destroy, and devour. His ‘fingerprints’ are on all this; our battle is against a spiritual foe.

In America, and around the world, his servants do his bidding. In many nations, political and cultural leaders are his ‘foot-soldiers.’ But don’t be deceived: Those who war against God never win. They are destined for judgment. The psalmist sums it up well:

Why are the nations in an uproar

And the peoples devising a vain thing?

The kings of the earth take their stand

And the rulers take counsel together

Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,

“Let us tear their fetters apart

And cast away their cords from us!”

What is God’s response to this attack?

He who sits in the heavens laughs,

The Lord scoffs at them. (Psalm 2.1-4)

As we observe the effects of sin in our country around the world, we must remember: Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, Messiah, is the King of kings, and Lord of Lords. No earthly ruler can unseat Him, and He will one day return to reign (see Rev. 19-20)! Trust in Him.
