Getting Ready for Another Election

Ready or not, another presidential election season is upon us. Is it just me, or do these seem to come around more often than they used to?! At this writing, the presumptive nominees of the two major political parties are Joe Biden and Donald Trump – the sitting president, and the previous president. As Christians seek to ‘tread the waters’ of biased and misleading reporting – resoundingly demonstrated throughout the mainstream media, we must be wise, avoid the false narratives, and maintain a strong stand for truth.

This is particularly true in these ‘last days,’ as politics encroaches ever-more into the arena of ethics and morality. This is not man’s domain; it is God’s. The shifting sands of humanistic morals provide no trustworthy foundation; they are constantly changing. Mind you, politicians have rarely demonstrated much backbone in the area of morals, but in our day, many have given up any idea of absolute truth, and western culture is floundering on the brink of anarchy as a result. In these times, Christians must stand strong.

When politicians support abortion, they are supporting the killing of innocent human beings, created in the image of God. A Christian should never vote for a politician who supports abortion. This is perhaps the clearest ‘litmus test’: God included murder in the Ten Commandments, and declared that those who take another life forfeit their own. While the long-overdue overturning of Roe v Wade by the Supreme Court was gratifying, politicians who once masked their support for abortion are now making their position known. This is the ultimate moral issue of our day. Beware: Politicians will outright lie to cloud this issue!

Politicians who support ‘gender fluidity’ and non-binary sex theory (some posit as many as 64 “genders”) not only undermine biological science, but attack humans as created by God, and thus God’s design for humanity. God created us male and female (Gen. 1.27), and that exhausts the gender options. Similarly, when politicians support ‘gay marriage’ and LGBTQ issues, they intentionally distort, and ultimately destroy, God’s plan for marriage and family. God calls this an abomination. Christians must stand against such immorality, and never support those who seek to spread it.

Christians should also stand strong is in support for Israel. On a purely common sense level, this is a no-brainer: Israel is the sole democracy in the Middle East. Like any country, it has its flaws, but it is a light for liberty in a region that knows little of it. More than that, Israel is God’s ‘Chosen People.’ Zechariah declared that “he who touches you (Israel), touches the apple of His (God’s) eye” (2.8). God’s ‘calling’ of Israel is “irrevocable” (Rom. 11.28-29). For this reason, Satan hates them, and inspires nations (and the United Nations) to constantly attack them. Christians must stand strong in support for Israel.

There are, of course, many other issues which blur the distinction between politics and Christian morals today. What God hates, we should hate. What God commands, we should support. The prophet Isaiah warned that bad leaders would bring God’s judgment. His warnings came in the form of “woes” (5.18, 20-21):

Woe to those who drag iniquity with the cords of falsehood, And sin as if with cart ropes… Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes And clever in their own sight!

Does this describe some politicians today? Absolutely. So Christian, be wise. Discern truth from error, and support politicians who stand for God’s timeless truths.
