Do You Know Your Future?

In 1961, a representative of Decca Records was considering which of two singing groups to sign to a recording contract. He determined that, as he put it, “Groups with guitars are on their way out.” As a result, the recording company signed a contract with Brian Poole and the Tremeloes. The group they refused to sign? An unknown band called The Beatles. Yikes! If only they had known the future, they could have made millions!

Do you know your future? Every Christian should answer with a resounding “Yes!” But for too many believers, their assurance of the future is anything but sure. Like the Decca Records representative, they are fumbling in the dark, when they should be living with confidence.

God has revealed the future in stunning detail in Scripture, yet too often we fail to make time to read it, much less let it affect the decisions we make. He gave us this information to comfort us in times of distress, strengthen us in times of trial, and give us confidence and peace in the face of uncertain days.

David’s assurance of God’s protection and salvation is expressed often in the Psalms. He knew his future was secure because it was in the hands of the Lord. In Psalm 27:1 he writes,

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the defense of my life; whom shall I dread?

The Apostle Paul reflected on the power of God and the surety of His salvation, and summed up his attitude with these famous words: “What shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?” (Rom. 8.31)

David and Paul both faced distress, trials, and uncertain days. But their trust in the Lord gave them stability and confidence. Are you facing uncertain times – even difficult trials – right now? Are you seeking comfort? Are you in need of strength? Are you struggling to maintain your confidence in God?

God has given every believer a priceless gift: The knowledge of your secure future as a forever child of God. Look to your future! Be confident as you are reminded that nothing can separate you from His love (Rom. 8.35-39). Be comforted as you consider the coming Rapture (1 Thess. 4.13-18). Be strengthened as you realize God’s final victory over sin (1 Cor. 15.51-57). Be motivated as you reflect on the Judgment Seat of Christ, where every believer can receive rewards from our Savior (1 Cor. 4.5; 15.58).

It’s crazy what people consider valuable today: A scrap of paper on which Beatle John Lennon wrote lyrics to a song; a handkerchief held by Michael Jackson; a dress worn by Princess Diana; a pen used by John F. Kennedy. These items have all brought a fortune at auction. But how valuable are they, really?

Your Bible? It won’t bring much at auction, but its pages contain a gold mine of truth that are able to give you abundant life. David wrote that God’s Word was “more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold” (Psalm 19.10). That’s because it tells of your incredible future! Read it, study it, learn it…and let it change your life.
