Have you ever considered how different what we see is from what God sees? We see problems; God sees solutions. We see the superficial; He sees the substantial!  Let’s look ‘beneath the surface’ of one of the most famous events in Israel’s history: David anointed as king.

The story the news media missed
  • Victory over the Amalekites…but disobedience of God
  • Saul and Samuel at odds; people fear a violent conflict
  • Samuel goes to Bethlehem to sacrifice…

Note: Most important news often goes unreported!

A Closer Look at a well-known story

  • God to Samuel: “Stop grieving!” (1)
God doesn’t dwell on the past! Do we?
  • The people fear Saul; God calls for a sacrifice (2-5)
    W
e focus on fears; God wants our focus on Him.
  • Samuel sees physical stature; God looks deeper (6-10)
The Lord looks at the heart – which means…
*** THOUGHTS ·  DESIRES ·  INTENTIONS  ***
  • Samuel doesn’t stop until he obeys completely (11-13).
God’s man trusts and obeys no matter what happens.

 Principles for Life

  • The mark of greatness is simple obedience to God.
  • The eyes of faith look forward – not back.
  • God looks at our hearts: What does He see?
…man looks at the outward appearance,
But the Lord looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7 (NAS)
