Revelation 4-5, Part 1
What an invitation: A door in heaven, and a voice
says, “Come up here!” John’s vision of the throne
in heaven is mystifying at points, but it’s overriding
message is clear: The Lord is on His throne, and He
is worthy of worship and praise!
The Scene In Heaven (Ch.4)
· God on His throne: Indescribable splendor!
· 24 thrones with 24 elders clothed in white with golden crowns
· Flashes of lightning and peals of thunder from the throne
· Seven lamps blazing and sea of glass before the throne
· Four living creatures, full of eyes, with six wings, saying:
- “Holy is the Lord God, the Almighty!”
- “Worthy is our Lord, the Creator!”
The Lamb Who is Worthy (Ch.5)
The Question: Who is worthy to open the scroll?
The Answer: The Lion of Judah, the Root of David…the Lamb!
· The 24 Elders sing a New Song!
· Myriads of angels join in!
· All creation joins the chorus!
Looking forward…looking back…
“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain…”
Revelation 5:12
For Further Study
1. Sometimes people think of heaven as a boring place – people sitting around strumming their harps. Consider the description of heaven in John 4. Imagine the light, color, beauty, sounds, and activity! How does this affect your anticipation of going to heaven one day?
2. There are many strange and hard-to-visualize depictions in Rev.4, but they all point to the sovereignty and attributes of God. Reflect on the scene and goings-on, and describe what God is like as evidenced by the scene around His throne.
3. In Revelation 5, the only one worthy to open the book (scroll) and break its seals is the Lamb (Christ). Why is Christ alone able to open it? What has He done (v5)? How did He do it (6,9,12)? What might this suggest about the contents of the book?
4. The vision of John which starts in Revelation 4:1 does not stop at the end of chapter 5! How long does it continue? What does it include?
5. Looking ahead to next week’s study, see what you can find out about the where, when, who, how, and why of Revelation 4-5.
When does Rev.4-5 take place? (See 1:19 with 4:1!)
Who are the elders? Who do they represent?
If this is going on in heaven, what is happening on earth?
Where are we at this time? How do you know? How did we get there?
