Revelation 7
Today, various Gentile Christian ministries
are leading Jews to faith in Jesus Christ; but
can you imagine the reverse – Jews leading
Gentiles to Jesus? That day is coming…
Warning To All Who Enter Here…
· ‘Creativity’ (and confusion) reign in this prophecy!
· Cults love ‘playing’ with these passages – and mislead many!
· Read humbly, trusting God, and take the normal meaning!
144,000 Sealed Israelites on Earth (7:1-8)
· How many? Not ‘a whole lot’ – but 144,000!
· Who are they? Israelite ‘evangelists’! (Christian Jews)
Tribulation Saints in Heaven (7:9-17)
· How many? A ‘great multitude, which no one could count’!
· Who are they? Gentile converts during the Tribulation!
· Where are they? In God’s presence, their sufferings over!
A Message to ‘Sealed Saints’ in the Church Today!
“…the Lamb in the center of the throne shall be their shepherd…and God shall wipe every tear from their eyes.”
Revelation 7:17
For Further Study
1. Revelation 7:1-2 introduces us to four angels “standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds…”, who had power to harm the earth. What do these ‘four winds’ refer to (see verse 3, and compare with Jer 49:36-38; Hosea 13:15)? When do these angels unleash their judgments?
2. The 144,000 “bond-servants of our God” from every tribe of Israel (vv.3-8) are given a seal on their foreheads (see 14:1). What was this for? (See Rev 9:4) Of course, another mark on the forehead is well-known in Revelation – the ‘mark of the beast’ (see 13:16f; 14:9; 20:4). From what does each mark protect the one who has it? To what does each mark expose the one who has it?
3. In verses 9-12, we have a wonderful heavenly antiphonal song sung between the innumerable “great multitude…from every nation” and angels who prostrate themselves before the throne. How do their lyrics differ? How do they agree? Can you think of any reason why they are different?
4. The white-robed saints from the tribulation, we read, “are before the throne of God; and they serve Him day and night in His temple” (v15). We often think of a ‘reward’ being like a retirement – where we don’t have to work any more, and we can just sit around and snooze all day! Some even think of heaven this way (we’ve all seen the depiction of dead saints floating on clouds strumming harps)! What does this passage suggest we’ll want to do in heaven – and how those who are faithful servants of Christ on earth will be rewarded in heaven?
5. Reflect on the scope of God’s grace, from the dawn of creation, to the fall, to the birth of Israel, through centuries or waiting, to the birth of Christ and His subsequent death, to today – when ‘though we are faithless, yet He remains faithful’ (see 2 Tim 2:13)…to even the dark days of tribulation to come, when He raises an army of Jews to save more! Amazing grace, indeed!
