The Second Coming of Christ
Revelation 19

No single event is more longed for in
hearts of believers than the return of
Christ to earth. God’s patience with
earth will end one day; dark times of
tribulation will follow: But after the
darkness will come the dawn!

How Did We Get Here? (Revelation 1-18 revisited)
· The Revelation of Jesus Christ: Was, Is, Is to come! (1)
· Christ to the Church: Persevere: I am coming! (2-3)
· Church in heaven: God’s wrath poured out on earth! (4-18)

The Dawn of the Son: The Second Coming (19)

Scene 1: Praise in heaven to the Lord, the Almighty! (1-6)

Scene 2: Announcing the Marriage supper of Lamb (7-10)

Scene 3: To earth: The Son-King coming to Reign (11-16)

Scene 4: Armageddon: Evil’s reign is Ended! (17-21)

And I saw heaven opened; and behold, a white horse, and He who sat upon it is called Faithful and True… And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written,
KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
Revelation 19:11,16

For Further Study

1. Rev. 19 opens with an extraordinary worship service in heaven. The first ‘stanza’ is in vv1b-2, the second v3, with a responsive “Amen!” in v4, then the ‘worship leader’ calls everyone to join in praise, and a thunderous “Hallelujah!” ensues (v6f)! But did you notice the content of their praise (see vv 2-3)? How is this like – or unlike – our ‘worship songs’ today?

2. Verses 7-9 refer to the ‘marriage supper of the Lamb,’ but what exactly is this? In Bible times, marriages involved three steps: First, a marriage contract was consummated (often the parties were still young), making them legally married. Second, when the couple reached a suitable age, the groom came to the house of the bride and escorted her to his home. Third, guests were invited to the groom’s home for the marriage supper, a feast in honor of the bride and groom, followed by a celebration lasting up to a week. When is our ‘marriage contract’ consummated (at what point do we become part of His bride)? What coming event matches with our bridegroom, Jesus Christ, coming to take His bride to His home (see 1 Thess.4:16-18)? When and where might the ‘marriage supper’ take place?

3. When Christ returns to earth (verses 11-16), He is dressed for battle! With Him are “the armies which are in heaven” (14). Who are these ‘soldiers’ riding on white horses? Compare Rev. 17:14. Who in Scripture are identified with words like “the called and chosen and faithful”?

4. The battle of Armageddon, alluded to earlier in Revelation (see 14:20; 16:14,16; 17:14) is really less of a battle than a slaughter (19:19-21)! The forces of earth align against Jesus Christ; their leaders – antichrist and the false prophet – are thrown alive into the lake of fire, and the rest are killed. How does the reality of Christ’s eventual and absolute victory over evil help you as you ‘put on the armor of God’ (Eph 6:10ff) and do battle with Satan every day? Do you understand why the Apostle Paul could say what he did in Romans 8:37?
